Week  8

Wow again, another busy week in Key Stage 1!

As you know, we have had visitors in our classrooms this week and the children really showed their enthusiasm for learning - it has been lovely to see!

We can't believe that we are entering the final week of this half term, time really has whizzed by!

Literacy - In literacy this week we are reading a lovely book by Jill Murphy called ' Whatever Next!'  The story is all about a bear who goes to the moon and back before breakfast!

Numeracy - In numeracy we are revisiting the work we have covered this half term. We will: partition, order, count in mutliples, write numbers and lots more besides!

Topic - Our week is going to be slightly different because we are going to spend a good deal of time on our Design and Technology project (DT). To finish our topic on space, the children are going to design and make their own moon buggies!

They will have lots to think about, such as what they want the buggy to look like, what parts they need and whether the buggy is strong enough to withstand the craters!

A quick reminder -  You should by now have received your child's appointment for Parents Evening  next week. We are really looking forward to welcoming you into school.

Finally, we would like to thank you once again for your continued support it really is appreciated!

Enjoy the rest of the weekend.

Week 7

Wow! Are we really on Week 7 of the Autumn half term? Time is zooooming by at the speed of a space rocket on the way to Mars!
The children have been really busy and messy creating  3D planets out of Papier Mache. It was fantastic and funny  to watch the children trying to blow up their balloon then with great relish using  lots of gloopy glue to stick on pieces of cut up paper. The end products will be going on display in our classrooms very shortly so watch this SPACE !! (Sorry that was a weak joke!)

Not only have the children worked hard to develop the space theme in their art work but also in their PE Dance sessions. They have worked with a partner to create their dance routines, initially linked to Holst's Planet Suite but more recently they have begun to grove to the theme tune of the film "Men In Black" and David Bowie's 'Space Oddity.' Have a look at the pictures below and see just how well they've worked with a partner to create their dances...

So what's in store for the week ahead?

Literacy - In literacy this week, we are continuing to write about the planets in our Solar System and we are also taking a look at the Sun. Our focus this week is to use some Amazing Adjectives to  describe the beauty of the sun and planets. Please have another look at them on the website below http://www.planetsforkids.org/

then the challenge is to make the following sentence a fantastic sentence by using adjectives ...

The Sun is at the centre of our Solar System.

Numeracy - In numeracy, we are starting to look at Data handling. We will begin the week by sorting data on  odd/even numbers. Can you remember the rhyme that helps us remember?
(0, 2, 4, 6, 8, even numbers are great! 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9, odd numbers all the time! )
Then we are moving on to sorting data using 'Branching trees!' If you want to find out what they are it will all be explained later on in the week - no they don't have leaves but they do have branches!!. As the week progresses we will move on to look at bar charts - wow yet another busy week!!

Can you create a bar chart of the different types of vehicles that come down the road where you live in just one day?

Have a fantastic week :)

Week 6

Week 6 has arrived and Key Stage 1 is as busy as ever with lots of exciting learning opportunities around every corner. We are continuing with our Space theme and, at the end of last week, we started to make our own planets out of paper mache ... watch this space for some very messy pictures of Class 3 making the structures for their planets.

This Week ...

Literacy - In literacy this week, we are writing about the planets in our Solar System. We are focusing on extending our sentences by adding super connectives to explain our ideas and add extra information. If you want to find out more information about the planets, have a look at this website ... http://www.planetsforkids.org/.

Challenge ... can you write a super sentence about a planet using one of these connectives ...
  • because
  • but
  • which
  • so
  • when
Numeracy - In numeracy, we are starting to look at rounding an estimating. We will begin the week by looking at estimating (the skill of making a good guess) and will apply this to estimating numbers on a number line. We will then move onto rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000.

Challenge ... can you round these numbers to the nearest 10?
  • 14
  • 27
  • 39
  • 145
  • 1232
Have a fantastic week :)
