It is Week 5 this week and the start of December! I hope everyone enjoyed opening their advent calenders this morning :)
Last week, the children very much enjoyed designing their own character for the story of Can't You Sleep Little Bear. We had Little Owls, Little Foxes and even a Little Eagle.
Next Week ...
Literacy:
In literacy this week, we will be enjoying different Paddington Bear stories and exploring some of the different adventures he has been on. Paddington certainly is a curious bear and, over the next two weeks, the children will have the opportunity to create their own adventure for Paddington Bear to enjoy!
We will be watching these two clips this week:
1.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4eMZPEUR9As (Please Look After this Bear)
2.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCPnsqxDKf4 (A Bear in Hot Water)
3.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0MIxqPBrJq4 (Trouble at the Beach)
Please share and enjoy these clips with your children to help them become more familiar with the adventures of Paddington Bear. For more Paddington Bear resources and fun games, visit: http://www.paddingtonbear.com/.
Numeracy:
In numeracy this week, we will be continuing to become subtraction superstars!! Children will be using the malteaser method to help them calculate subtraction problems.
Also ... Last week the children enjoyed making Christmas crafts and cards for the Christmas Fair on Wednesday 4th December. These crafts will be on sale on their class stall as well as a fun game for you to come and play. We look forward to seeing you at the Christmas Fair .... please do come and say hi! In addition, we have a whole school pantomime to enjoy on Tuesday morning. We will be watching Sleeping Beauty which should be lots and lots of fun.
Have a super week!

Autumn term 2 week 3
What a busy week we have had!
In Literacy the children have certainly enjoyed listening to the story of 'Can't You Sleep Little Bear?' We have talked about feeling scared and thought of amazing adjectives to describe lots of different woodland creatures such as prickly hedgehogs and sly, cunning foxes. This is in preparation for next week when the children write their own story based on a character of their own.More of that later.....
In Numeracy we have continued to practice mental maths and addition using partitioning and the column method. It is good to see that the children are growing in confidence and have even tackled adding 3 numbers together ! This is the focus of the homework and once again we thank you for supporting your child in this as it really does make a difference.
You may have noticed your child coming home singing songs? Yes it's that time of the year again -we have started rehearsing our Christmas production! The children are as enthusiastic as ever and we know it will be wonderful. Please could we ask that if your child has a speaking part they practice at home? All the children concerned have taken words home with them, however if these have been mislaid we can provide a copy. Also, we have been busy making Christmas cards and decorations for the Christmas Fayre. How many shopping days are left?
Now what have we got in store for next week?
Literacy
In literacy the children are going to be thinking about the beginning, middle and end of the story 'Can't You Sleep Little Bear?' They will sequence pictures from the story and write super sentences to go with them. The idea is that they will then write their own version of the story with different characters.
Numeracy
In numeracy this week, we will be moving onto subtraction using maltesers. Miss Golia briefly outlined the method in the recent meeting. The idea is that the children partition the first number and then cross out the number to be taken away. The remaining maltesers are grouped together and then counted to give the answer. We will also be working with money.
Have a great weekend

Autumn term 2 week 3
Firstly, let's have a look at what's been going on in Key Stage 1 this week...
In Literacy the children thoroughly enjoyed the story of 'Peace at Last.' It was fantastic to see the children retelling the story to their partner, ensuring that they included all the sounds that Mr Bear had to try and sleep through.
On Wednesday, Mr Bear ( actually the class teachers) visited the children in class and they had the opportunity to interview him. They questioned how he was feeling in the different parts of the story and all the children were eager to ask Mr Bear their question (although the children did say afterwards - "we knew it was really you and not Mr Bear!")
One of the children asked,
"Is that why you've got big black bags under your eyes because you couldn't sleep?" (It should be noted that this was a natural effect and not theatre makeup!!!)
In Numeracy the children are really starting to get to grips with mental addition strategies - putting the biggest number in their head and counting on or adding the units then the tens and counting on to find the total.
This was the focus of this week's maths homework and we ask that you keep practising these strategies with your child at home as this is a big help in developing their understanding of other concepts in maths.
By the way, many thanks to all those parents who attended Miss Golias' Number workshop which was on Tuesday after school. We hope that you found it beneficial seeing how number is taught in school.
Well we couldn't have planned our half term topic of All About Bears better as this coincided with our Children in Need activities on Friday. The children looked super spotty and they thoroughly enjoyed placing their pennies on Pudsey's face on the playground; eating their scrummy buns at playtime and then nicely jigging up their lunch taking turns dancing on the Wii!!!
Thank you so much for all your contributions.

Literacy
In literacy this week, we will be reading the book Can't You Sleep Little Bear? by Martin Waddell .
Our focus in literacy is to continue looking at characterisation and we will be thinking about using AMAZING ADJECTIVES to describe Little Bear and Big Bear's physical appearance and their thoughts and feelings.

Numeracy
In numeracy this week, we will be continuing to practice our calculating skills! We will develop our addition skills by beginning to add three numbers together. Also we will continue to apply this knowledge of addition to solving word problems.
Can you use your mental addition skills to quickly add these three numbers?
14 + 9 + 6 =
23 + 8 + 17 =
(Remember use your knowledge of addition facts for making 10 to help you.)

Autumn 2 Week 2
Week 2 starts tomorrow and it is another busy week in KS1. This week, we will be continuing with our topic All About Bears! We started our clay work last week and we will be busy this week finishing off our clay bear sculptures. In addition, we will brushing up on our ICT skills and starting some word processing using Clicker 6. We will be writing non-chronological reports about different bears and learning how to put pictures into our documents.
Literacy
In literacy this week, we will be reading the book Peace at Last by Jill Murphy. Our focus in literacy is characterisation and we will thinking about using AMAZING ADJECTIVES to describe Mr Bear's physical appearance and his thoughts and feelings.

On Monday I ate 21 sweets and on Tuesday I ate 31 sweets.
How many sweets did I eat altogether?
Lastly .... please remember it is a training day on Thursday and school will be closed. We will be open again, as normal, on Friday where we will be raising money for Children in Need.
Have a fantastic week :)

Special Visitors
This week, in KS1 we have had some surprise visitors in our classrooms. We have had three mystery teddy bears turn up to school and join each of the three classes. Here is Class 3's bear .... they named him Timmy and have been helping him to settle in to life in Class 3!!
They have even made him a car, a bed and a new name tag :)

Autumn 2......
Hi and welcome back to a busy and exciting half term. Over the course of this half term we have some exciting literacy to complete, careful calculating to do,bear books to read, clay bears to make, investigate bear prints, practice for the Christmas Production, make Christmas Decorations have Christmas party... I am sure you will agree it's not just the children that are going to be tired by the time we break up for Christmas!
Literacy
This half term we are going to writing lots and lots of bear stories with inspiration taken from some favourite bear picture books, such as, Whatever Next, Peace At Last, Can't Sleep Little Bear, Old Bear stories and Paddington Bear.
Numeracy
This half term we are going calculating mad.....!!! We are going to be learning how to calculate quickly through mental strategies. We are also going to be learning how to add and subtract through partioning numbers and counting.
We will revisit how to write and recognise numbers. Teachers in KS1 have high expectations and we are looking for children to work independently on given tasks and apply their knowledge through a range of different contexts.
I will be holding a numeracy workshop on Tuesday 12th November in Class 2 at 3:15. This will enable you to see how we teach addition and subtrction in order for you to support your child at home.
Topic
This half term we will be exploring a Word Processing programme called Clicker in which children will be expected to write a report about a variety of bears.
They will also be making clay bears, finding out how the teddy bear got its name and investigating bears habitat and prints.
We will also be making Christmas crafts during the course of this half term and production will be in week 7.
Please look out for exact dates.
Children will be learning their Christmas songs and will be taking words home for them to learn. Please support the team and help your child learn these as they bring them home.
It looks set to be a fantastic half term... We are excited - I hope you are too...

Week 8
Wow again, another busy week in Key Stage 1!
As you know, we have had visitors in our classrooms this week and the children really showed their enthusiasm for learning - it has been lovely to see!
We can't believe that we are entering the final week of this half term, time really has whizzed by!
Literacy - In literacy this week we are reading a lovely book by Jill Murphy called ' Whatever Next!' The story is all about a bear who goes to the moon and back before breakfast!
Numeracy - In numeracy we are revisiting the work we have covered this half term. We will: partition, order, count in mutliples, write numbers and lots more besides!
Topic - Our week is going to be slightly different because we are going to spend a good deal of time on our Design and Technology project (DT). To finish our topic on space, the children are going to design and make their own moon buggies!
They will have lots to think about, such as what they want the buggy to look like, what parts they need and whether the buggy is strong enough to withstand the craters!
A quick reminder - You should by now have received your child's appointment for Parents Evening next week. We are really looking forward to welcoming you into school.
Finally, we would like to thank you once again for your continued support it really is appreciated!
Enjoy the rest of the weekend.

Week 7
Wow! Are we really on Week 7 of the Autumn half term? Time is zooooming by at the speed of a space rocket on the way to Mars!
The children have been really busy and messy creating 3D planets out of Papier Mache. It was fantastic and funny to watch the children trying to blow up their balloon then with great relish using lots of gloopy glue to stick on pieces of cut up paper. The end products will be going on display in our classrooms very shortly so watch this SPACE !! (Sorry that was a weak joke!)
Not only have the children worked hard to develop the space theme in their art work but also in their PE Dance sessions. They have worked with a partner to create their dance routines, initially linked to Holst's Planet Suite but more recently they have begun to grove to the theme tune of the film "Men In Black" and David Bowie's 'Space Oddity.' Have a look at the pictures below and see just how well they've worked with a partner to create their dances...
So what's in store for the week ahead?
Literacy - In literacy this week, we are continuing to write about the planets in our Solar System and we are also taking a look at the Sun. Our focus this week is to use some Amazing Adjectives to describe the beauty of the sun and planets. Please have another look at them on the website below http://www.planetsforkids.org/
then the challenge is to make the following sentence a fantastic sentence by using adjectives ...
The Sun is at the centre of our Solar System.
Numeracy - In numeracy, we are starting to look at Data handling. We will begin the week by sorting data on odd/even numbers. Can you remember the rhyme that helps us remember?
(0, 2, 4, 6, 8, even numbers are great! 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9, odd numbers all the time! )
Then we are moving on to sorting data using 'Branching trees!' If you want to find out what they are it will all be explained later on in the week - no they don't have leaves but they do have branches!!. As the week progresses we will move on to look at bar charts - wow yet another busy week!!
Can you create a bar chart of the different types of vehicles that come down the road where you live in just one day?
Have a fantastic week :)

Week 6
Week 6 has arrived and Key Stage 1 is as busy as ever with lots of exciting learning opportunities around every corner. We are continuing with our Space theme and, at the end of last week, we started to make our own planets out of paper mache ... watch this space for some very messy pictures of Class 3 making the structures for their planets.
This Week ...
Literacy - In literacy this week, we are writing about the planets in our Solar System. We are focusing on extending our sentences by adding super connectives to explain our ideas and add extra information. If you want to find out more information about the planets, have a look at this website ... http://www.planetsforkids.org/.
Challenge ... can you write a super sentence about a planet using one of these connectives ...
Challenge ... can you round these numbers to the nearest 10?

Week 5 in Key Stage 1...
HI.. Hope you are all having a fabulous weekend... Well another week done and ready to start a further week of learning.... I just don't know where all the time is going!
Here is what is happening this week....
Literacy - We are continuing to write non-chronological reports on Space - this week we are delving a little deeper into the Space Race.
We are expecting children to write facts about the Space Race in order to make their non-chronological reports exciting and interesting for the reader.
Numeracy -We are still thinking about Place Value but we are going to explore place value with money!
We want children to be able to
- find different amounts with coins
- Understand that 30p and 4p = 34p
- Understand when they see 4 x 10p's and 7 x 1p's it totals 47p
- Investigate how they can make different amounts in different ways
- Use greater and less than signs to show which amount is more/less
- Order different amounts of money through partitioning from the least to the most
Topic - We are exploring the Space Race. We have lots of exciting activities planned.
- Children to complete Space Pictures
- Children to make their own facts booklets about the Space Race
- Make a time line of the Space Race
Remember E-Safety
We are continuing to talk to the children about been safe on the internet.
So far we have talked about what inforation is safe to give and that that is not.
Children have particiapted in exercises that demonstrate that certain information is specific to them and must not be shared.
They have also completed posters about the rules of keeping safe.
Class 2 Have Boubon the attendance bear this week... We are after some ideas of something different that we can do with Bourbon any ideas let us know through the comments section.
On Tuesday saw lots of parents descend into our KS1 classes. We had lots of fun and I hope you did too.
The purpose of the afternoon was to enlighten you to our teaching approaches, specific focuses we are establishing this year.
E.g mental maths and reading
We endeavoured to show you quite a bit in a short space of time.
Here is some headlines from my talk afterwards.
Homework
Spellings will be sent out and we expect children to learn them. We will be looking for them in their writing. In my experience testing children does not mean they apply in their writing. Team points will be given if we spot them!
Only one set of spellings will be sent home across Key Stage 1. You would be surprised by how many children do not know these spellings across the whole of KS1.
Reading please read wth your child as frequently as it is possible. Getting into a bedtime routine often helps. This is something I did with my children and they couldn't wait to open their new book! As they are now teeenagers... I do miss those times!
Mental maths homework will be sent home and it will be linked to what we are doing within class.
If you are unsure please come in and see the staff.
Phonics folders will come home but we expect the children to take some responsibility to remember to take their folder out of their tray! A gentle reminder would be helpful if they don't come home with it! Pleaase use the phonics folder for the children to show you what new sounds or revisited sounds they are currently learing in class.
Trips
There will be two trips across the course of this year. 1 to Skipton Castle and 1 to The Deep. We will be operating a payment from Autumn 2 in order to spread the cost of the trips across the year.mPlease look out for deatils around this.
I also talked about our successful year in 2012/2013.
Phonics had an improvement of 23% pass rate to 93% on the previous year.
KS1 data had a significant improvement in all three areas of reading, writing and numeracy.
We expect this to be significantly improved again this year.
We are having a phonics meeting on Tuesday after school in Class 2... everyone is welcome!
And the last thing...
We are not perfect... but
you have educating your children a dedicated, hard working and caring team of teachers and support staff.
Please remember we are always looking to imporve what we do... so if you do have anything please feel free to pop in and see me!
Many thanks

Week 4
Numeracy
In numeracy this week we will continue partitioning with Maltesers! The children are becoming quite expert now! We will also order numbers and introduce the symbols for greater than (>) and less than (<). We will then move on to adding/ subtracting 10 and using number squares refreshing the memories of the children in Year 2.
Another very busy week in KS1! Everyday we seem to have more giant rockets, planets and aliens filling our classrooms! The writing the children are producing seems to prove how much they are enjoying this space topic.
The hard work the children are putting into their phonics and writing skills is really beginning to show - have a look below at William Kearsley's writing about his alien. He is in Class 1 and he was chosen as the Writer of the Week for the whole of Key stage 1 - what a superstar!

Thank you for returning the homework, it was fantastic to see just how hard the children work at home to produce such good work. Each week the homework will have a numeracy focus (going over the work covered in class) and a spelling focus. In future it will go out on a Wednesday to be returned on the following Monday. Many thanks as well for the continued support with reading at home, it really does make a difference!
Next Week ...
Literacy
In literacy this week, we will be reading a lovely book, ' One Giant Leap - The Story of Neil Armstrong.' We will also be watching clips of the Apollo 11 launch and landings which we are sure the children will love! They will then use this information to write their own non chronological report about the Apollo 11 mission using sub headings, captions, pictures and questions. What alot of things to remember!

Week 3
This week the children have begun to settle back into school routines. It's great to see the children bringing in their home reading book eager to build up those stars in their reading record so that they have the opportunity to become the week's ******STAR READER****. (If the children change their book three times in a week they are rewarded with a special sticker and the opportunity to be the chosen STAR READER for the week.) Many thanks for all the support you give the children with their reading.
The children had their first PE sessions of the year and this half term our focus is dance. Using Holst's Planet Suite the children will create their own dance routines. Why not click on the You tube link to enjoy the music for yourself.
(Please can you ensure all your child's uniform is named as already some children are missing jumpers and cardigans following PE sessions - thank you.)
Again this week we have been invaded by aliens. They have been mysteriously appearing in our classrooms .... have a look at some of them - if you dare!!!
Also the children are still working hard at home and bringing in some absolutely fabulous Learning Log Space creations - using their Design Technology skills and junk material to create super space models.
This week has seen the start of activity clubs and despite one or two hiccups the children have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to show their skills in - gardening, baking, art, sports, ICT, story reading and much more. What a talented bunch we have in Keystage One!

Literacy
In literacy this week, we will be continuing with our current writing block, non-chronological reports. We will be reading the book 'The King of Space' by Jonny Duddle and the children will be designing their own robot and writing a non-chronological report about the special features of their robots. Children will be focusing on the features of a non-chronological report, including the title, subtitles, images, caption, quick facts and bullet points.
Numeracy
In numeracy this week it's all about Maltesers. The children will be learning or in the case of the Year 2 children, refreshing their memories on how we can use the Malteser method to partition numbers.
It works like this...
Can the Year 2's remember what a bucket of Malteser's represents?
Quick Quiz ... How would you partition
11, 23, 42, 66, 125 or 327
We hope you've had a fantastic weekend and we look forward to seeing you on Monday,

Gateway to ICT in KS1
HI ....
All passwords to our ICT platforms will be sent out ASAP... with a rigorous review of our E safety policy we have reset all passwords. We will provide children with a passport to some fabulous resources. However, we do encourage and expect children to learn their passwords.
In my experience they have a better memory than I do, especially when it comes to using SUMDOG!!

Week 2
Wow! The first full week of the new school year is here and it is an exciting week at that. Last week, children settled in fantastically to their new classes and got back into learning without even blinking an eye. The atmosphere in KS1 was fantastic and you would not have known the children had only been back three days!
Our topic this half-term is SPACE!! We started the school year off with receiving some amazing learning log projects about space which clearly showed the children had been busy over the summer holidays. So many fantastic projects were received. Well done KS1 on some fantastic home learning. Here is just a selection of some of the fantastic work below:
We started the term off with an alien theme. We designed our own aliens, modelled them out of plasticine and play-dough, wrote reports about our aliens and even investigated the forces needed to make a 'blow-paint alien'. Here are some examples of the children's fabulous work below:
This Week ...
Literacy
In literacy this week, we will be continuing with our current writing block, non-chronological reports. We will be reading the book 'Bob's Best Ever Friend by Simon Bartram' and the children will be designing their own best friend for Bob and writing a non-chronological report about this friend. Children will be focusing on the features of a non-chronological report, including the title, subtitles, images, caption, quick facts and bullet points.
Numeracy
In numeracy this week, we will be looking at number patterns and identifying how many a pattern is increasing by. Towards the end of the week, we will be investigating odd and even numbers.
Quick Quiz ... can you sort these numbers into odd and even and post your response on the blog? How you know you are right?
1, 14, 18, 21, 101, 1005

Welcome to the new year... 2013- 2014
Welcome back!!!
I trust you have had a fabulous holiday and feel relaxed and have enjoyed the time with your children. I myself have had a great time this holiday and spent some quality time with my girls! It's not all been freedom the KS1 team have met up frequently during the holidays in order to plan the exciting activities over the few weeks. We also have spent a subtantial amount of time setting up the classrooms with new stock which I am sure your children will come and tell you about. Please feel free to go into your child's class and have a look at the vibrant displays and fabulous areas of provision the team have worked hard to make them all Space related!
The topic this half term is 'Destination Outer Space'. We are really blasting off with all things Space. We will be writing non-chronological reports about aliens, planets, Space Race, the Sun and the Moon.
Please ask what your child's writing target is.... they may even show a lovely looking symbol! We encourage parents to pop in after school and speak to class teachers and look through books... Please take up the opportunity to do this. If you wish to speak to your class teacher about any concerns, you can make an appointment with the class teacher via the office or directly after school. Please respect the staff's role in a morning. It is important that staff are available to see all children in safely and conduct the register by 8:50.
In numeracy we are are exploring Numbers and the Number System. This will involve reading numbers, writing numbers, counting in 1's,2's,5's,10's and even 3's and 4's, understanding what each digit represents in a number, patterns in number e.g odds and evens, number sequences, estimating and rounding.... WOW! It's a lot but with this under their belt it will set them up for a year of fabulous numeracy learning.
In topic we are making blow paint aliens, space pictures, making our own rockets, learning about forces including gravity, looking at famous astronauts such as Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin and the Apollo Mission. We will making time lines of the Space Race and Neil Armstong's life, understanding that the sun is a light source and the moon reflects light....
We really are in for a fantastic first half term of learning!!!!
Reading - please be patient with teachers as they spend a few weeks jiggling groups around for Guided Reading and the home reading scheme.
You may find your child comes home with a lower level band than previously had. This does not mean your child has suddenly dropped a level. Your class teacher maybe consolidating previous learning and allowing your child to get up to speed after several weeks of holiday!
Please make use of the library and Bug Club to enhance your child's diet of books. The library is open after school and you are free to take a book, enjoy it and then return it. There really are some amazing books that have been invested in by Mrs Bailey and our fabulous Literacy Miss Fowler.
I will be doing a story telling club in the library on a Thursday afternoon. Please come and join me to choose books for your child.
Thanks
